Educator of the Week: Sarah Emma Edmonds

Sarah Emma Edmonds, as America’s first female teacher, was born in 1841 in

Canda. She began teaching her career at a girls’ school in New York City and she later enlisted in the Union Army as a man named Frank Thompson in 1861.

She served for two years before being honorably discharged, and after the war,

she wrote a book about her experiences, which was published in 1864.
